What is Skin Cancer?

Skin cancer is the most common yet one of the most preventable types of cancer, originating in skin cells that grow uncontrollably, forming abnormal growths or tumors. There are three primary types:

* Basal Cell Carcinoma (BCC), which is the most common and least dangerous.

* Squamous Cell Carcinoma (SCC), which can spread but is treatable if caught early.

* Melanoma, the most serious and potentially life-threatening form, responsible for most skin cancer deaths.

The primary cause of skin cancer is damage from ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun or tanning beds, which harms skin cell DNA. Risk factors include excessive sun exposure, fair skin, a history of sunburns, and a weakened immune system. Early detection is key, with the ABCDE rule (Asymmetry, Border, Color, Diameter, Evolving) helping identify suspicious moles. Regular self-exams and professional skin checks by a dermatologist are crucial for timely treatment.

Skin Cancer Prevention Tips

Skin cancer is preventable in most cases. Here are a few simple steps to reduce your risk:

* Wear sunscreen every day, even when it’s cloudy or cold.

* Seek shade, especially during peak sunlight hours (10 a.m. to 4 p.m.).

* Wear protective clothing, such as wide-brimmed hats and UPF-rated swimwear.

* Avoid tanning beds and excessive sun exposure.

* Get regular skin checks by a dermatologist, especially if you have a history of sunburns, many moles, or fair skin.

How to Detect Skin Cancer Early

Early detection is critical to treating skin cancer effectively. Self-exams and professional skin checks by a dermatologist can help identify suspicious moles and spots early. Use the ABCDE Rule to assess your skin for potential signs of melanoma:

* Asymmetry: One half of the mole does not match the other half.

* Border: The edges of the mole are irregular, ragged, or blurred.

* Color: The mole has multiple colors or uneven shading.

* Diameter: The mole is larger than 6 millimeters (about the size of a pencil eraser).

* Evolving: The mole is changing in size, shape, or color over time.

Take Control of Your Skin Health: Assess Your Risk

Understanding your skin cancer risk is the first step toward proactive prevention. Our Skin Cancer Risk Assessment Tool will soon be available to help you better understand your personal risk factors for skin cancer, based on elements like your skin type, sun exposure habits, and family history.

* Skin Type: Did you know that fairer skin is more susceptible to sun damage and skin cancer?

* Sun Exposure: The more time you spend in the sun without protection, the higher your risk of developing skin cancer.

* Family History: A family history of skin cancer can increase your personal risk, making regular checks and prevention even more important.

This free, confidential quiz will help you evaluate key risk factors and offer practical tips on how to reduce your exposure and improve your sun safety habits.

In the meantime, start by practicing these essential steps:

* Wear sunscreen every day, even on cloudy days.

* Protective Clothing: Choose swimwear and hats with UPF protection.

* Check Your Skin Regularly: Look for new moles, freckles, or any changes in existing skin spots.

Hosted annually in the vibrant city of Miami Beach, the Gala serves as the primary fundraising initiative for the SIHOF Foundation, providing critical support for skin cancer research, prevention programs, and sun safety education.

The Gala brings together leading fashion designers, industry pioneers, celebrities, and health advocates for a night of celebration, inspiration, and action. Every ticket purchased, every donation made, and every sponsorship secured contributes to advancing the SIHOF Foundation’s mission to raise awareness about the dangers of sun exposure and promote long-term sun protection.
